The Heretic

This has been in the back of my head for a while and I’ve wanted to share it with the world but I’ve been a little afraid to, afraid of what some of my friends and fellow motorcyclists might think. What I’m about to confess to you may seem wrong but I can’t help myself. It’s time for me to go public with my point of view, damn those who might think less of me, I know I’m not the only motorcyclist who feels this way.

The Motorcycle Gospel of the Highway 1:29, states “Though must enjoy hustling thy motorcycle at maximum velocity down the gnarliest, curviest, most challenging mountain roads you can find.” To which I, Floyd The Heretic must reply, “fuck that shit.” Seriously it’s just not that much fun for me. Yes I’ve done it a few times but the thrill is gone after 1 or 2 trips down a road with no scenery except for road signs warning me about the next hairpin turn or switchback ahead of me. Doing this over and over is boring. B-O-R-I-N-G.

sign 11 turns 318 miles

I am The Heretic a sign like this is just fine with me.

Give me a nice Saturday morning with my wife on the back traveling down a nice country road full of idyllic scenery, through some small towns, historic districts etc. Maybe plan a stop at a restaurant or a bike show between 50 and 200 miles away. You know a good relaxing ride where you occasionally go slow enough to smell the roses, rotting roadkill animal corpses and the food at the diner on the corner in that little town that you’ve never been to before.

Even though I don’t want a road with endless curves to give me a total body workout a few nice sweeping curves are welcome. So is mile after mile of arrow straight 2 lane blacktop through forests, fields and villages. On a hot summer day in the south nothing beats coming across a long tunnel of trees throwing shade over a narrow blacktop road gently winding its way through the swamps of the Pee Dee & Low Country here in South Carolina. It’s like a little piece of heaven on 2 wheels. Another ride I really enjoyed last year was touring the Gettysburg National Park and surrounding countryside on my Honda Shadow. Great winding roads and lots to see along them.

As a frequent motorcycle commuter my rides to and from work are enough to get my heart rate up and scare the shit out of me sometimes so when I set out to do some recreational riding it should be relaxing. If I want to be tired, sore and drenched in sweat after riding a motorcycle I’ll ride a dirtbike or go do a track day somewhere. (Both of these are things I enjoy doing sometimes.)

There I’ve said it, now I hope someone out there understands how I feel. I’m not a Sunday morning squid out to prove myself against the mountain. Nor am I a barhopping biker riding with my friends from tavern to tavern. I’m just an ordinary everyday motorcyclist who rides because I love it and ordinary everyday riding is my favorite thing to do. If that seems like a heresy to anyone then I’m proud to be the heretic.

Cool Bikes, Wicked Cars, Cool Dudes, & Hot Ladies – Rockabillaque

Considering this was the 2nd annual Rockabillaque event, color me very impressed.

<a wicked 55 chevy>

Nothing else like a black 55 Chevy, especially with this under the hood.

<injected 55 chevy>

Walking from our parking space to the event area, I just couldn’t resist snapping a picture of the artwork on this building.

<art building 3 park circle>

The bike show portion was kind of small but there was really some quality iron on display. Since they had a rat class I decided to take the Assault Scrambler and even managed to talk this very lovely & gracious young lady into letting me take her picture next to it.

A lot of fine detail on this rigid Evo.

<fantastic rigid sporty>

I love the placement of his lithium battery, the fender struts and of course the red wheels with wide whitewalls. Classy!

A shout out to Low Country Harley for sponsoring the show and thanks for the gift certificate I won.

No respectable motorcycle show would be complete without at least one Triumph.

This Bratstyle KZ440 actually won the rat class. Cool little bike.

Great music was available from different bands on different stages throughout the day.

…..

Had lunch at the Barbeque Joint, one of the events sponsors, great food.

The Mrs. & I took nearly a hundred pictures around the event and in this next section let’s look at some highlights from the car show.

Let’s start with a pair of evil looking Volkswagens!

<a broadsword for a shifter>

Things were always cool, and this one looks like it’s literally been driven to hell and back, making it that much cooler!

<rat survivor thing>

Rat Hole Garage brought a cool old truck,

<rat hole garage truck>

and even cooler a matching bicycle!

Ford Falcons were always a favorite of mine, ( I’ve owned a couple) and this sharp convertible is da bomb.

Details, details, details…

<saw blade sun shade>

In addition to the usual assortment of fine hot rods, muscle cars, and rats there were also a couple of sweet British sports cars one being this nice white Jaguar,

<vintage Jaguar>

and the other was this very sharp looking Lotus 7 replica.

<Lotus Seven replica>

As much as I love the whole “ratrod” scene it was great to see a traditional, painted with flames, polished & shiny hot rod like this ’32 Tudor.

<Trad Hot Rod>

How about a full on Pro Modified race car? Better still it’s a Henry J, with a blower and “Hillborn style” fuel injection.

<pro mod Henry J racer>

The outside of this particular Dodge van was nothing special but when you swung open the side doors the interior was pure disco era rolling sin bin.

<tiki man van 70s sin bin>

And last but definitely not least the world infamous Trash Nova shown here cruising the not so mean streets of North Charleston. Hey it was given the peoples choice trophy for best of show!

<The Trash Nova>

The show had several great sponsors, here I am posing with the display for Guilty Pleasures. Hey you gotta love their business motto!

<guilty pleasures>

Some how the gentlemen at the Holy City Beard & Mustache Society talked me into entering the partial beard division of the beard & ‘stache event. It was great fun and after a bit of hairy competition I shaved out a 4th place finished and the fellows with the really gnarly beards took the top 3.

<partial beard contest winners>

There were all kinds of things going on including, a puppet show, 50’s era fashion show, & a tattoo contest. Some of these were happening simultaneously so I was unable to get pictures from everything, but trust me this weekend if liked great music, wild tattoos,cool bikes, wicked cars, cool dudes, & hot ladies, Park Circle in North Charleston, South Carolina was the place to be.

<models from the rockabillaque fashion show>

Some of the beautiful models from the fashion show.

Now I have saved the best part for last despite only taking my pocket camera and standing at the back of the crowd I was able to get at least one decent picture each of the Miss Rockabiilaque Pinup contestants. I was a bad reporter and I didn’t get their names or anything, I forgot to take a notebook and the crowd was fairly noisy cheering them on so I didn’t hear all the names anyway. For a larger view click on the pictures below.

My advice to you is to look for this event next year and try to attend, we had a great time & I am sure you will too!

Peace Y’all!

Raring to go for October!

Greetings Dear Readers,

Let me apologize for not posting any goodies for you for the past three weeks. The old ‘Psyco has been down and out with a severe case of shingles. Not only have I missed communicating with you, I also missed the first 3 weeks of hunting season, not to mention some of the best riding weather we’ve had since spring. Okay I did sneak the bike out a time or two but trust me when you got shingles you feel every single tiny imperfection in the road. Even a little tar strip felt like riding into a 4 inch high curb. But I am recovering now, & boy have I got some plans for this month.

There are a few event pics to show off from Labor Day weekend. I have scoped out a fantastic Website of The Month, and of course another of my profusely illustrated mechanical how-to articles. It’s gonna be a great month!

Have a fantastic day!

Riding into Fall!

This morning was glorious; temperature was a very nice 67 degrees Fahrenheit (19 C) as I strapped my lunch onto the back of my old CB to come to work this morning. Later today the temperature is supposed to be back up to 90 but this morning gives the first hint of better days to come.

Everyone knows that these old Hondas are aggravatingly cold natured even when bone stock in excellent condition. When you throw on a set of pod filters & a header you exacerbate this trait to the point that you have to be patient & let it warm up well before trying to move it. But to me it’s worth it just to hear that intake moan when you twist the right grip in anger. Properly set up on a well-tuned bike these old Keihin carburetors have a throttle response & drivability that rivals modern fuel injection, once the engine is up to operating temperature.

After kissing my wife and telling my dog goodbye, I close my modular helmet and back out of the carport. After pushing down on the shifter and hearing the satisfying snick of first gear engaging, I let out the clutch and head for the gravel road at the end of the drive. There are days when I miss my old Ninja & its ability to snake down a twisty paved road seemingly by thought command, but today is not one of them. On this scrambler I run twice as fast through the loose rocks and deep sand leaving my home.

Upon reaching the pavement after looking both ways I pull out and make a quick run up through the gears relishing the delightful mechanical concerto that only an old four banger can play, especially when it is sucking in cool dense air through a set of K & N filters. It may just be in my head but to me every motorcycle I’ve ever ridden feels more powerful & somehow more alive when the weather starts to cool and the air gets denser.

Leveling out somewhere around the speed suggestions on the road signs the cool damp air pushing through my mesh jacket gives me a little chill that is so enjoyable after the long hot summer. Right now the relative humidity is somewhere around 98%, later today when it gets hot again that will be miserable but this morning it is invigorating and I roll on the throttle some more just to enjoy it. On days like this it is so damn good to be alive.

Normally I try to leave the house at least 15 minutes earlier than I actually have to just because it makes such a huge difference in the traffic I encounter. Turning left off of the two lane blacktop onto a four lane highway. I cruise toward the first small town that I will pass by on my little commute. Traffic density picks up a bit especially in the school zones, but all of the early risers don’t have to be in such an all fired hurry to get to work because they have plenty of time, so everyone is nice & polite making the drive pleasant rather than stressful. Leaving the bypass I turn down another two lane road that starts out rural but quickly turns into a crowded suburban neighborhood as you get closer to the city of Florence. Since I am early it is nearly empty, but in another 20 minutes navigating this particular road will be like driving through a pinball machine.

There is a dense fog settled in over the little town of Quinby as I pass through, the mad commuter rush to work and school is just getting started. Visibility is maybe a half a mile and I frequently have to wipe my face shield & look out for the cages that do not realize they become invisible in the fog without their lights on. Leaving this town behind I turn right and head towards my final destination with my speed adjusted for the fog. As I am cruising along that “driver” comes flying up behind me out of the fog with no lights on of course. Young, female & aggressive, she is piloting a typical 10 ton SUV, while deeply engrossed in a conversation on the phone that she is holding up to her ear with one hand. Since there was no traffic in front of her, and she hasn’t looked at the speedometer since she got in the car she has no idea how fast she was going. Blissfully unaware that if I have to panic stop there is no way she could possibly stop fast enough to keep from running over me she pulls into position about 25 feet behind me and stays there. On one long straight stretch I deliberately slow down hoping she will pass but she doesn’t. There is no malice in her heart toward me she is just indifferent to the act of driving. I’m not in her way; she is just using me as her speedometer instead of hanging up the phone and looking at the one in her dashboard.

Coming into the last residential neighborhood I slow down to just below the posted speed limit mindful of the numerous children waiting for the school buses that are out in the fog and ten ton Tessie in her giant white death tank actually pulls to within fifteen feet of my taillight. Knowing there is a very rough triple railroad crossing set into a high hump coming up shortly I get ready. Normally I’d slow down for this crossing but am kind of afraid to do so this morning, but hey I am riding what is basically an oversize dirt bike so at the approach to the track I stood up and gassed it sailing across the tracks and feeling nary a ripple.

Behind me the Stupid Useless Vehicle slammed into the foot tall hump and its driver was no doubt smacked around inside of it as she panic braked across three rough train tracks. For the rest of this street she maintained a safe respectable following distance and when we reached the next stoplight she actually stopped a ridiculously long distance to my rear when just a minute earlier she had been tailgating me at 55 mph.

The last mile and a half of the trip was uneventful and pleasant and as I parked to go into the office I decided to spend my lunch hour typing this up and posting it for you. In a few hours it will be time to run the five o-clock five hundred in the 90 degree heat. But I will still enjoy the ride!

Peace Y’all

Dont EVER STOP Believing!

Hello everyone!

It’s hard to believe this blog has been going for over two years now. In the beginning I started doing this just because I wanted to show off a little, and maybe make a few of you happy, or help you if only just for a minute. Never for one second did I dream that I would still be doing this for this long or that tens of thousands of you would be stopping to read the words I write & look at the pictures I take.

The helpful hints and how to articles were just my way of sharing my little tiny bit of knowledge with people whom want to do it themselves but to do it right. Yes, you may look for a few more tutorials in the year ahead, just be patient with me.

The product reviews started out with me just sharing my experiences about items that I had actually purchased. I never dreamed that one day I would be road testing and reviewing new motorcycles & other products. WOW! What rush, now I feel like one of my moto-journalist heroes. Most of my heroes growing up were writers anyway, people like, Twain, Hunter Thompson, Robert A. Heinlein, Kevin Cameron, Ayn Rand, and many others kept me dreaming of what could be throughout my life and I am most grateful for that.

Even more shocking is finding out that a nobody writing a little blog like this could actually make some difference in the world around them. I published a post recently entitled A Low Down Dirty Shame and while it may have been a coincidence but Auburn School Road in Darlington was cleaned up within a couple of weeks. The other road is still a disaster zone, but there is hope.

Another example are the challenges & changes being made to what was a a thoroughly draconian and down right evil animal control ordinance proposed by our local Humane Society . You can find the text of the original proposal at this link here.

The latest proposal can be found here at this link. While still very much overkill and still focusing too much on punishing the law abiding owners and breeder for the sins of those who ignore the existing laws, at least now there is an organized resistance, standing guard ready to fight this. It has not come up for a cosideration in our county council but we will be watching. The Darlington Pet Owners Advocates will be holding their first meeting on Thursday May 2nd at 7:00 pm at The Music Hall, 1945 Harry Byrd Highway in Darlington S.C. Join us if you will.

That’s enough from me for now, This has been a great ride so far & I owe a lot of thanks to my patient & loving wife, my patient & loving God, & to all of you, my dear readers. Just remember, if you don’t try, you’ll never make a difference.

Peace Y’all

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 12,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 20 years to get that many views.

Yes I know they are mainly a scooter dealer. Even so all of you hairy chested macho badass guys & gals who only care about “real” motorcycles need to check these folks out after all in addition to the top quality scooters they also carry Cleveland Cyclwerks, Hyosung, and Sym motorcycles. Plus scooters are cool again, sure a lot of them are still 50cc post DUI transport, but there are available in larger fullsize and full speed models but in today’s world scooters are once again in style. And Carolina Fun Machines is the best scooter dealership I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. They are not some fly by night scooter dealer at the flea market, not a used car lot, with a batch of cheap shit scooters to sell for a quick buck but an actual functioning dealership that carries reasonably priced products of better quality. Plus the story of this stores founding is worth reading even if you have no other interest in their products, go check out the “about page” right now. Now click here to see the service department!

Here’s a shot of the store front for you.

Riding Kiddie Bikes on the Rail Trail in Florence S.C.

At the Ebenezer Road end of the trail.

At the Ebenezer Road end of the trail.

A few weeks ago our granddaughter expressed an interest in learning to ride a bicycle without training wheels. Since the kiddie bike she had already was way to small for her, I took an old Mongoose BMX frame set I had hanging on the wall in my shop, swapped the rear wheel out for one with a coaster brake, and then threw it together with plenty of fresh grease, flat black & pink paint to create the girly ratrod in these pics. The mint original Black Friday Krate shown is one I purchased in Charlotte earlier this year. My wife is riding the yellow Ross Polo Bike Jr. that has its original paint & chrome, but has some typical period custom pieces added such as the banana seat and the bumpers. The only thing I’ve replaced on it are the rear tire & chain.

We promised her that once she learned to ride well we would take her with us one Saturday morning, so with my beloved wife’s patient coaching she practiced until she could start, ride, & stop by herself without falling down. Of course since she was riding a 20″ bike we decided that we should too.

Left to right, Black Friday Krate, Mongoose Sniper, & Ross Polo Bike Jr.

Left to right, Black Friday Krate, Mongoose Sniper, & Ross Polo Bike Jr.

It was fun, of course it turns out that a 20 is almost to big for the kid, just the perfect size for my wife, and ridiculous looking with my big old butt sitting on it, especially the Krate with it’s little tiny front tire.

Here we have a large man on a small bicycle! Having loads of fun too.

Here we have a large man on a small bicycle! Having loads of fun too.

When putting around on these little cruisers, you can forget proper leg extension, cadence, etc. Just relax and enjoy the ride. We put in at the trailhead at the Bicycle World bike shop on Palmetto St. in Florence ( a big thanks for allowing people to park there btw ), crossed the bridge over Jefferies Creek, and turned left to ride the smooth pavement section of the trail up to Ebenezer Road, where we turned around and came back to the end of the pavement that you see above before heading back to the van to take her home in time for her Karate lesson. There is just the slightest downhill grade from Ebenezer back to the creek so I took advantage of it to try out a speed run on the Krate. At about 18m.p.h. on the speedo in third gear the front end starts to bounce a bit, push it on up to around an indicated 22 and a speed wobble sets in too. ( maybe because I weigh more than 200 pounds, not necessarily a fault of the bike ) Plus even with dual calipers the rear brake only is meant for posing not for riding like a bat out of hell. It was still FUN though!

for some reason this strange little woman keeps following me around & taking my picture, she must be a stalker ;)

Some wangster had been down on the trail tagging a little bit, normally I don’t mind graffiti art in the right (read urban/industrial) setting but out in the middle of the woods? Give me a break. Besides if all I could paint was ugly shit like we saw that day I’d be ashamed to pick up a spray can.
