Royal Enfield Modifications (So Far)

My Interceptor 650 is up to about 2600 miles so far. It has been a very pleasant and reliable motorcycle so far. The only trouble that I’ve encountered has been a nail in the rear tire. Fortunately I was close to home and called my wife to pick me up so I could go get the truck and retrieve it. None of my Royal Enfield modifications have been necessary except maybe for the handlebar change.

The very first modification that was done was adding 1” handlebar risers. On the day I left the dealership after paying my deposit I ordered a case of oil filters and a set of handlebar risers. When I sat on an INT650 for the first time in the showroom I immediately felt like it would be more comfortable if the grips were just a little bit higher. When I did the first service it was just a matter of removing the bolts holding the handlebar mounts, placing the risers under the mounts and bolting everything up with the new extended bolts that came with the risers. Not a difficult mod to do if you feel you’d like to have your handlebars a bit higher.

One actual complaint that I had about this motorcycle was engine vibration felt through the handlebars. The bars are solidly mounted and the grips are made of a thin hard rubber so I purchased a set of Grip Puppies. These are foam rubber sleeves that slip over your existing grips and add a bit more cushion and they did help a good bit. Before you bother to comment that I’m holding on to tightly, I’m not. Over 20 years of mechanics followed by 20 years of CAD work have left me with arthritic hands that are a lot more sensitive than they should be. It is what it is.

Since I use this bike for commuting and weekend 2 up riding I installed a passenger backrest and luggage rack combo. While this has been a useful and practical modification it doesn’t help the looks of the Interceptor at all and if I were ever to seriously enter it in a show it would be temporarily removed. The rack is handy to have but it’s ugly.

From the crate U.S. models of the Interceptor 650 have black sidecovers with logos designating them as the INT650 to avoid copyright conflict with another motorcycle company. I’ve joined a couple of Royal Enfield Facebook groups and one of the members offered to sell me a set of painted sidecovers with the Interceptor 650 logo for a good price so I got them. Having the sidecovers color matched to the fuel tank is a huge improvement to the appearance of an already fantastic looking bike.

Vibration in the bars was still a problem for me and although the factory cross braced handlebars looked really cool they were not shaped right for me and put my wrists at an angle that wasn’t as comfortable as they could be so I decided it was time to get serious about the handlebars so I bought a set of Emgo flat track style bars. Now the Emgo bars are way too wide to use with the stock cables and wiring so I trimmed 3.75 inches from both ends so that they would fit. Afterwards I put some metal plugs inside them, filled the ends up with lead weights and then capped them off with plastic end plugs.

Next up was a set of ODI Mushroom Grips. The ODI grips are quite a bit shorter than the stockers so I had to shorten the throttle sleeve to fit right. Once that was done it was time to locate the switch gear and drill the holes for the locating pins that keep them from rotating around the handlebars.

Now when I reach for the grips my hands are in a more natural position and between the weights and the soft thick rubber grips handlebar vibration is greatly reduced. I’m actually thinking of removing the risers now & I like the looks too!

In the beginning I had zero plans to perform any “performance” modifications to this 650 but just couldn’t help myself. I looked at the aftermarket air filters and airbox lids and decided they just were not worth the cost so I fired up my 3d printer and made myself an airbox lid with the large opening that works with the stock air filter. Does it actually help anything? Without a dynamometer to test it who knows, I kind of doubt it makes much difference.

For the exhaust side I went with a set of Powerage stainless mufflers, the reason I chose these muffler is that after watching a bunch of online videos and reading reports in various forums is that they seemed to be the quietest of the aftermarket exhaust if you leave the baffles in. They come with a wrench that allows you to remove the db killer baffle if you want it to be extra loud. With the baffle in you get a nice snarl that’s a little louder than stock. Am I done with this motorcycle? No, for someone like me a motorcycle like this is a blank canvas, a never ending rolling art project that even if it were to seem finished I reserve the right to start all over and take it in a completely different direction just because I can’t help myself. The next thing to try will be a color matched quarter fairing from MK Designs, the pictures I’ve seen look really good and the price isn’t bad either.

In addition to the Royal Enfield modifications I’ve got a few other projects to tell you about, some of them are in progress but a couple of them are already completed I just haven’t had time to write about them. Until next time, happy wrenching.

Every year for the last 11 years during the Labor Day weekend holiday the club Ton Up North Carolina has been hosting a great multiday event for vintage motorcycle enthusiasts in Durham North Carolina. The main focus is on vintage café racer styled customs, restorations, competition bikes, and vintage scooters. Ever since I discovered this event three years ago the Saturday bike show has been permanently added to my calendar.

One of the great things I love about this event is the fact that every year at least one really oddball custom will show up. The top motor freak at this year’s show was a diamond plate covered Goldwing that had everyone scratching their heads.

This being a café racer club there was plenty of fine British & European iron on display including an original unrestored 1983 Triumph TSS with electric start.

Fellow VJMC member Mike McSween was showing his terrific pair of restored vintage Kawasaki road racers with his 1971 H1R 500, number 56 in the picture taking home first place. The other green jewel in the picture is his 1972 H2 750 triple.

Anytime I get within a mile of a Vincent I have to take its picture. Even though I am normally a Japanese bike fanatic, Vincents like this 1952 model really are my ultimate dream machine. Perhaps one day…

Until 2014 there was no class for American motorcycles and while this was still the smallest class it did attract some high quality equipment including a 1950’s vintage Indian and this fine looking Harley Davidson J model.

I must confess that when the American class was first introduced that I and a couple of others had mixed feelings about it. We feared that an influx of the so called American bikers would destroy the character of this event and make it into yet another chrome, mullet, & tattoo show for us (and our fat wallets) to stay away from. Fortunately this has not happened so far. I was there for nine hours this year and only heard one person make a disparaging remark about the motorcycles with superior engineering, handling & reliability. Since she was blonde I’ll forgive her for not having the intellectual acumen to understand that some of us view our motorcycles as something more than just a two wheeled “Members Only” jacket.

It was great having Rommel Harley Davidson there as a sponsor and I really enjoyed checking out the new Street 750 demo trailer that they had set up. Check it out on the video below at the bottom of the page.
Other motorcycles at the show that I really liked included this very tasteful black Suzuki café racer. These late 70’s & early ‘80s Suzuki cycles don’t get nearly the love from restorers or customizers that they should, even though they were probably the best all-around motorcycles of that time period.

Ton Up NC Blog The July 2014 Website of the Month

I first heard of the Ton Up Club during a visit to the International Motorcycle Show in 2013, they had a cool display setup with a bunch of neat vintage motorcycles and flyers for their upcoming shows. Last September I visited the Bull City Rumble and saw just what a great show (and party) these fine people over in NC can throw & I’ve been keeping up with them ever since.

About a month ago they published a really cool post, “After the Flood, The BSA That Refused to Die.” After reading it I immediately hit them up for permission to link to it. No I’m not going to give you the details, click on the link and go read the post for yourself.

Oh well it is a nice fantasy, but one part of it is true. You can get a brand new hand built “British” (in name and style anyway) motorcycle that looks like it fell out of a time capsule from 1955. The first Royal Enfield motorcycles were produced in 1901. In 1967 the factory in England closed but the Indian made Enfield Bullets soldiered on and have evolved into the reliable, oil tight and modern emissions compliant machines we have today. While these are not fantastically powerful machines compared to our modern machinery they are much better in so many ways than an actual antique motorcycle.
Immediately when approaching the Classic or Bullet 500 you are struck by its relatively compact looking dimensions. Today so many “retro” styled machines have turned into larger than life caricatures of the machines they are trying to imitate. This is one of the reasons I dislike so many of them, being a fan of 50’s-70’s bikes such as the CB400, XS650, or old Triumphs and Enfields, to me the new “retro bikes” look tacky compared to the real thing. The 2012 Royal Enfields are not retro replicas; they are still the real deal. An upgraded genuine vintage motorcycle that is available right now with a 2 year warranty, imagine that.

When I threw my leg over the Classic 500 and hoisted it off the kickstand the first though that went through my mind is whoa this thing feels substantial. Not overweight & porky but definitely dense, solid, and hefty feeling. You can feel the steel in this one. With my 29 inch inseam I can sit on the saddle with both boots firmly on the ground.

Hit the starter button and the fuel injected single starts up with a nice thump-thump-thump idle note that is a characteristic of a big slow revving single. Yes it vibrates a little but it’s a pleasant soothing feeling not annoying. Pull in the clutch, snick it into first gear, and ease out on the lever. Just remember that you are working with authentic 1950s horsepower (27.5hp @ 5250 rpm) so don’t pull out too closely in front of that sports car that is barreling down the street at twice the speed limit. Even 1950s horsepower is more than enough to stay ahead of most traffic from stoplights around town. Plus people look. These are good looking motorcycles that are different from the mundane and commonplace Hogs and crotch rockets that litter the streets around here.
In addition to thanking LA Motorsports for allowing me to borrow a couple of their motorcycles I really want to thank general manager John for pointing me towards Jamison Road in Summerville. While it had too much traffic to really cut loose it is the kind of road that is perfectly matched to the feel and great handling of these bikes. It was just a couple of miles of nice sweeping turns that let me roll the bike from side to side in a most enjoyable fashion while the engine played a slow bass drum beat as I rolled the power on through each curve, and slowed back down just so I could do it again & again. This is the kind of handling that comes only from classic British motorcycle architecture. No high tech suspension and wheels, just good frame design and a nice wide handlebar. Sure I could probably run that same road at 3 times the speed of the Enfield on any late model plastic covered crotch rocket, but to be honest with you, I would not have been any happier, nor had a better time doing so.

I did not try any interstate trolling or top speed runs, and quite frankly as the top speed is around 85 or so I would not be afraid to, but this is a bike that really belongs on twisty country roads. The suspension is basic stuff but competent. The single disc front brake & rear drum brake are well up to the task of handling what this bike can dish out.
One selling point of this machine is its 85 mpg fuel economy. Folks, that is getting close to moped territory, but on a real solid steel motorcycle that can haul 2 people around with aplomb and looks damn good doing it.
As India becomes more and more of a manufacturing powerhouse the fit and finish of these motorcycles is now much better than when they were first reintroduced to the western world back in the early ‘80s. They have always had the right look, but now they have the polish and refinement to go with it. Plus this is probably the most comfortable motorcycle I have ridden in the last ten years.

If you want to turn curves at reasonable speeds in the country and turn heads like a rock star in town, and you don’t care about being able to run 150 mph, or looking like a rich yuppie poser, then this is the bike for you. My road tests are not about outright performance, but about how a motorcycle makes me feel, and this bike makes me feel damn good. It’s not badass, does not have exotic cachet, power, and is not a status symbol, it is just a motorcycle without all that extra bullshit. Plus you can get a brand new one out the door tax, title, tags & all for around 7 grand.
And I can see myself owing one….
